MODULE 7 ASSIGNMENTS

MODULE 7: FACIAL EXPRESSION AND EMOTION

Module 7 Assignment 1 (M7A1): Facial Expression Sheets

Recommended Time Investment: 1.5 Hours per page

Recommended Frequency: Twice Weekly

Facial Expression Sheets (or just Expression SheetS) are a great way to explore different facial expressions for characters. In this assignment, you will need to:

  • Design and draw a neutral character portrait
  • Create a grid of 8 of these heads, removing the facial features to create a worksheet

Using what you have learned about facial expression and emotion, complete 3x character expression sheets, showing a myriad of complex emotions. Ensure you write the name of the emotion below each head, and strive to create the most believable emotion linked to the keyword.

Please utilise the emotion keyword list within Module 7 to assist you.

Module 7 Assignment 2 (M7A2): Observational Studies

Recommended Time Investment: 2-3 Hours Hours per page

Recommended Frequency: Once a Month

Taking a sketchbook or a portable drawing device with you, go and enjoy a beverage of your choice at a local coffee shop. In this assignment, you’ll want to pay special attention to observing the facial expressions of the people around you. Draw as quickly and as loosely as you can, and try to fill a few pages with very quick expression drawings, utilising what you have learned from life gestures, as well as facial expression and emotion.

REMINDER: Keep in mind our ordering of importance on the face – the eyebrows are quite bold and read first, and most easily, then the eyes and then the mouth.
