compound shape, 7 00:00:12.09 --> 00:00:14.03 that would be fine. 8 00:00:14.03 --> 00:00:16.01 But let's just say for whatever reason 9 00:00:16.01 --> 00:00:18.07 I want to keep the entire name together. 10 00:00:18.07 --> 00:00:21.01 Well one way to work would be to marquee 11 00:00:21.01 --> 00:00:23.01 all the letters like so. 12 00:00:23.01 --> 00:00:25.02 And then go over here to the path finder panel 13 00:00:25.02 --> 00:00:29.05 and once again Alt or Option click the Exclude icon. 14 00:00:29.05 --> 00:00:31.05 Which would mess up the fill and strobe, 15 00:00:31.05 --> 00:00:33.01 but otherwise we end up with a 16 00:00:33.01 --> 00:00:35.06 single compound shape and the interaction 17 00:00:35.06 --> 00:00:38.03 of the first four letters goes unharmed. 18 00:00:38.03 --> 00:00:39.06 But here's the problem. 19 00:00:39.06 --> 00:00:41.04 If I now double click on any one of these 20 00:00:41.04 --> 00:00:44.00 path outlines to enter the isolation mode, 21 00:00:44.00 --> 00:00:47.00 I can access the new sub paths just fine. 22 00:00:47.00 --> 00:00:49.04 But if I click on one of the old ones, 23 00:00:49.04 --> 00:00:51.09 I select them all together, because they're 24 00:00:51.09 --> 00:00:54.07 part of a nested compound shape. 25 00:00:54.07 --> 00:00:56.05 So in other words, they are another 26 00:00:56.05 --> 00:00:58.08 compound shape, as you can see on the far 27 00:00:58.08 --> 00:01:00.07 left side of the control panel, 28 00:01:00.07 --> 00:01:03.06 that is inside the newest compound shape. 29 00:01:03.06 --> 00:01:05.00 And what's really damning about that 30 00:01:05.00 --> 00:01:07.02 is that I can't enter in isolation mode 31 00:01:07.02 --> 00:01:08.01 for these letters. 32 00:01:08.01 --> 00:01:10.08 If I double --> 00:01:44.03 Paste in Front, or you can press Control F 48 00:01:44.03 --> 00:01:46.06 or Command F on a Mac. 49 00:01:46.06 --> 00:01:48.07 And that adds these letters to the 50 00:01:48.07 --> 00:01:50.08 existing compound shape. 51 00:01:50.08 --> 00:01:52.02 Which means I can select every 52 00:01:52.02 --> 00:01:54.04 sub path independently. 53 00:01:54.04 --> 00:01:55.04 Alright, now I want to be able 54 00:01:55.04 --> 00:01:56.07 to see what I'm doing. 55 00:01:56.07 --> 00:01:57.08 So i'll go ahead and marquee these 56 00:01:57.08 --> 00:02:00.00 new guys here and I will Alt click 57 00:02:00.00 --> 00:02:03.00 or Option click on the exclude icon 58 00:02:03.00 --> 00:02:05.01 in order to override their previous 59 00:02:05.01 --> 00:02:06.04 shape mode. 60 00:02:06.04
