1 00:00:00.00 --> 00:00:01.03 - [Voiceover] In this movie I'll show you 2 00:00:01.03 --> 00:00:03.05 how to combine multiple styles, 3 00:00:03.05 --> 00:00:05.08 and I'll also show you how to design styles, 4 00:00:05.08 --> 00:00:09.04 specifically with the intention of combining them. 5 00:00:09.04 --> 00:00:12.05 And so the first thing I'm gonna do here is confirm 6 00:00:12.05 --> 00:00:14.06 that the back layer is selected, and in fact 7 00:00:14.06 --> 00:00:16.02 I'm just gonna go ahead and lock down 8 00:00:16.02 --> 00:00:17.08 that Type layer for now. 9 00:00:17.08 --> 00:00:20.04 And then I'll grab my Rectangle Tool 10 00:00:20.04 --> 00:00:23.03 and I'll just draw a rectangle down here someplace, 11 00:00:23.03 --> 00:00:24.08 doesn't really matter where. 12 00:00:24.08 --> 00:00:26.09 And I'm gonna go ahead and zoom in on it, 13 00:00:26.09 --> 00:00:29.06 and I'll press Shift+X in order to swap 14 00:00:29.06 --> 00:00:31.03 the fill and the stroke, because I need a fill, 15 00:00:31.03 --> 00:00:33.00 I don't want a stroke, and I'll just go ahead 16 00:00:33.00 --> 00:00:35.06 and change the fill up here in the Control Panel 17 00:00:35.06 --> 00:00:38.07 to some shade of red. Really doesn't matter. 18 00:00:38.07 --> 00:00:40.05 Alright, now what I want you to notice 19 00:00:40.05 --> 00:00:42.07 is these two default styles right here, 20 00:00:42.07 --> 00:00:46.00 that don't have any fill or stroke associated with them. 21 00:00:46.00 --> 00:00:48.02 And we know that's the case because we can see 22 00:00:48.02 --> 00:00:50.05 this little none swatch right there, 23 00:00:50.05 --> 00:00:52.02 and one of them is called 'Drop Shadow' 24 00:00:52.02 --> 00:00:54.02 and the other is called 'Outer Glow'. 25 00:00:54.02 --> 00:00:55.06 And notice when you hover over 'em, 26 00:00:55.06 --> 00:00:57.04 you're gonna see some message about 27 00:00:57.04 --> 00:01:00.00 how you can Alt or Option click to 28 00:01:00.00 --> 00:01:02.05 add to the existing style. 29 00:01:02.05 --> 00:01:04.00 So if I were to click on this guy, 30 00:01:04.00 --> 00:01:07.00 I would just replace the fill with white 31 00:01:07.00 --> 00:01:08.02 and the stroke with black. 32 00:01:08.02 --> 00:01:10.03 Course that's not what I want, so instead, 33 00:01:10.03 --> 00:01:13.01 what I'll do is I'll Alt or Option 34 00:01:13.01 --> 00:01:14.04 click on 'Drop Shadow'. 35 00:01:14.04 --> 00:01:17.03 And so any of these guys that have little none icons, 36 00:01:17.03 --> 00:01:20.02 they are designed to be added to other effects. 37 00:01:20.02 --> 00:01:22.05 So I'll just go ahead and Alt or Option click 38 00:01:22.05 --> 00:01:25.01 and notice this time I kept my red fill 39 00:01:25.01 --> 00:01:28.02 and I added a drop shadow in the background. 40 00:01:28.02 --> 00:01:30.09 Now as you can see, that gives me a directional shadow. 41 00:01:30.09 --> 00:01:33.05 If I wanna create an omni-directional shadow 42 00:01:33.05 --> 00:01:35.04 that goes all the way around the shape, 43 00:01:35.04 --> 00:01:37.04 then I would undo that last effect 44 00:01:37.04 --> 00:01:39.09 and I would Alt or Option click on the 45 00:01:39.09 --> 00:01:42.07 'Outer Glow' five point effect right there, 46 00:01:42.07 --> 00:01:45.00 which as you can see, adds a dark glow, 47 00:01:45.00 --> 00:01:47.07 which results in a shadow. 48 00:01:47.07 --> 00:01:50.06 And by the way, if you click on the Library icon, 49 00:01:50.06 --> 00:01:52.04 you'll see a couple of Libraries 50 00:01:52.04 --> 00:01:54.03 with the word Additive in them, 51 00:01:54.03 --> 00:01:57.00 that indicates that these Libraries offer styles 52 00:01:57.00 --> 00:02:00.00 that are designed to be added to other styles. 53 00:02:00.00 --> 00:02:02.01 In any event, I'll let you look into those. 54 00:02:02.01 --> 00:02:03.09 But, what I really wanna do is show you 55 00:02:03.09 --> 00:02:07.06 how to design your own so-called Additive style. 56 00:02:07.06 --> 00:02:09.00 So I'll press the backspace key 57 00:02:09.00 --> 00:02:10.00 or the delete key on a Mac, 58 00:02:10.00 --> 00:02:13.05 to get rid of that rectangle and I'll click right there 59 00:02:13.05 --> 00:02:15.01 in order to select that line. 60 00:02:15.01 --> 00:02:17.02 And in case you're having problems finding it, 61 00:02:17.02 --> 00:02:19.03 what you wanna do, I'll just go ahead and press 62 00:02:19.03 --> 00:02:21.09 Ctrl+Shift+A or Cmd+Shift+A on a Mac, to deselect. 63 00:02:21.09 --> 00:02:23.07 What you wanna do is keep an eye out for 64 00:02:23.07 --> 00:02:26.01 the Arrow cursor that has a little square next to it. 65 00:02:26.01 --> 00:02:28.07 When you see the square you know you're hovering over 66 00:02:28.07 --> 00:02:32.02 the real line itself, at which point, go ahead and click. 67 00:02:32.02 --> 00:02:34.07 Alright, now what we need to make sure of 68 00:02:34.07 --> 00:02:36.06 when we're creating these kinds of styles, 69 00:02:36.06 --> 00:02:39.09 is they don't overlap with the other style attributes. 70 00:02:39.09 --> 00:02:42.04 And so I'm gonna switch over to my Appearance Panel, 71 00:02:42.04 --> 00:02:46.04 and let's say I wanna isolate just the Twist effect. 72 00:02:46.04 --> 00:02:48.08 I go ahead and click on the Spinning Line Style 73 00:02:48.08 --> 00:02:51.08 to assign it and then I'll grab my stroke right there 74 00:02:51.08 --> 00:02:53.05 and I'll click on the Trash icon 75 00:02:53.05 --> 00:02:56.01 in the bottom right corner of the panel to get rid of it. 76 00:02:56.01 --> 00:02:58.05 And then I'll select Transform and I'll once again 77 00:02:58.05 --> 00:03:00.06 click on the Trash icon to get rid of it. 78 00:03:00.06 --> 00:03:02.09 So now all we have is a Twist effect 79 00:03:02.09 --> 00:03:04.07 quite literally twisting in the wind 80 00:03:04.07 --> 00:03:06.09 because there's nothing to attach it to. 81 00:03:06.09 --> 00:03:08.03 That's absolutely great. 82 00:03:08.03 --> 00:03:10.00 That means we can save it's settings. 83 00:03:10.00 --> 00:03:11.06 Because it still has settings after all. 84 00:03:11.06 --> 00:03:13.01 If I click on the word Twist, 85 00:03:13.01 --> 00:03:14.05 we have an Anlge of 100 degrees, 86 00:03:14.05 --> 00:03:16.02 which is something I wanna preserve, 87 00:03:16.02 --> 00:03:18.03 and to do that all you need to do is 88 00:03:18.03 --> 00:03:20.07 Alt or Option click on the little Page icon 89 00:03:20.07 --> 00:03:22.06 at the bottom of the Graphic Styles Panel 90 00:03:22.06 --> 00:03:24.09 and I'll call this guy, Twist Only, 91 00:03:24.09 --> 00:03:26.01 and then press the enter key 92 00:03:26.01 --> 00:03:27.04 or the return key on a Mac, 93 00:03:27.04 --> 00:03:28.03 to save that Style. 94 00:03:28.03 --> 00:03:30.07 Now click on Waving Lines, so that I can gain 95 00:03:30.07 --> 00:03:32.07 access to my Zigzag style. 96 00:03:32.07 --> 00:03:35.07 I'll select Transform, be very careful here. 97 00:03:35.07 --> 00:03:36.09 Click on the Trashcan. 98 00:03:36.09 --> 00:03:38.07 Don't click on the little Page icon cause 99 00:03:38.07 --> 00:03:41.06 you do not wanna duplicate the Transform effect, 100 00:03:41.06 --> 00:03:44.07 that could create problems, and when I say create problems, 101 00:03:44.07 --> 00:03:46.08 it could create something that's too difficult 102 00:03:46.08 --> 00:03:48.07 for Illustrator to imagine. 103 00:03:48.07 --> 00:03:51.09 And when Illustrator can't compute, it crashes. 104 00:03:51.09 --> 00:03:54.05 So go ahead and drop down to the little Trashcan icon, 105 00:03:54.05 --> 00:03:57.00 click on it, grab the stroke right there, 106 00:03:57.00 --> 00:03:59.04 and click on the Trash icon to get rid of it. 107 00:03:59.04 --> 00:04:00.06 And then Alt or Option click on 108 00:04:00.06 --> 00:04:02.05 the little Page icon at the bottom of 109 00:04:02.05 --> 00:04:03.09 the Graphic Styles Panel 110 00:04:03.09 --> 00:04:06.05 and let's call this guy Zigzag as one word, 111 00:04:06.05 --> 00:04:09.00 cause it should be one word only, 112 00:04:09.00 --> 00:04:10.09 and then press the enter or return key, 113 00:04:10.09 --> 00:04:12.03 and notice that both these Styles 114 00:04:12.03 --> 00:04:15.02 have little none icons, indicating of course, 115 00:04:15.02 --> 00:04:18.01 that they do not convey fill or stroke attributes. 116 00:04:18.01 --> 00:04:20.05 Alright, now click on Vibrating Lines 117 00:04:20.05 --> 00:04:22.00 in order to apply it. 118 00:04:22.00 --> 00:04:25.09 Then grab Transform, be really super careful 119 00:04:25.09 --> 00:04:27.09 to click on the Trash icon, 120 00:04:27.09 --> 00:04:30.03 cause this one you can really blow up. 121 00:04:30.03 --> 00:04:32.00 If you duplicate the Transform effect. 122 00:04:32.00 --> 00:04:35.07 Because think about it, you're taking 89 copies, 123 00:04:35.07 --> 00:04:37.04 so 90 lines altogether, 124 00:04:37.04 --> 00:04:41.01 and then you're making 89 copies of them. 125 00:04:41.01 --> 00:04:44.05 That is just too many copies to start roughing up. 126 00:04:44.05 --> 00:04:46.03 Now grab the stroke and click on 127 00:04:46.03 --> 00:04:48.03 the Trash icon to get rid of it. 128 00:04:48.03 --> 00:04:50.07 And then go ahead and Alt or Option click 129 00:04:50.07 --> 00:04:52.01 on the little Page icon 130 00:04:52.01 --> 00:04:54.09 and call this guy, Roughing Only. 131 00:04:54.09 --> 00:04:56.02 And then I'll click OK. 132 00:04:56.02 --> 00:04:58.08 Alright, now I need to preserve the stroke 133 00:04:58.08 --> 00:05:01.01 with the Transform and only the Transform. 134 00:05:01.01 --> 00:05:02.06 And so I'll bring back anyone of these guys, 135 00:05:02.06 --> 00:05:04.06 doesn't matter, Spinning Lines is fine. 136 00:05:04.06 --> 00:05:06.02 And then I'll click on Twist, 137 00:05:06.02 --> 00:05:08.08 this time click on the Trash icon to get rid of it. 138 00:05:08.08 --> 00:05:12.02 So we're Transforming the strokes and doing nothing more. 139 00:05:12.02 --> 00:05:13.09 And now Alt or Option click once again 140 00:05:13.09 --> 00:05:15.03 on the little Page icon, 141 00:05:15.03 --> 00:05:18.06 and call this guy '89 copies', so you remember 142 00:05:18.06 --> 00:05:21.00 not to combine it with itself, 143 00:05:21.00 --> 00:05:24.06 and then click OK and create that Style. 144 00:05:24.06 --> 00:05:26.05 Alright, now drumroll please. 145 00:05:26.05 --> 00:05:29.08 We are going to do a combine at this point. 146 00:05:29.08 --> 00:05:31.06 So with this line selected, 147 00:05:31.06 --> 00:05:33.09 and we're gonna be really careful here. 148 00:05:33.09 --> 00:05:36.08 We're gonna try out a combine in this order. 149 00:05:36.08 --> 00:05:37.08 I want you to start, 150 00:05:37.08 --> 00:05:40.00 just because I know this can be dangerous. 151 00:05:40.00 --> 00:05:42.02 Do not, for example, start with Roughing 152 00:05:42.02 --> 00:05:43.09 and then apply Zigzag. 153 00:05:43.09 --> 00:05:46.05 That, in my experience, is the best way 154 00:05:46.05 --> 00:05:48.07 to crash Illustrator, that I know of. 155 00:05:48.07 --> 00:05:50.04 Instead, do this. 156 00:05:50.04 --> 00:05:52.05 Hover over Zigzag Only. 157 00:05:52.05 --> 00:05:55.03 If you're following along with me, if you dare. 158 00:05:55.03 --> 00:05:57.00 And you might wanna just go ahead 159 00:05:57.00 --> 00:05:59.04 and save this file really quick if you care about it. 160 00:05:59.04 --> 00:06:02.03 Then try this out. Now this I've never had crash. 161 00:06:02.03 --> 00:06:04.09 If you do it according to my exact instructions. 162 00:06:04.09 --> 00:06:07.08 I want you to hover your cursor over Zigzag Only 163 00:06:07.08 --> 00:06:09.04 and then press the Alt key 164 00:06:09.04 --> 00:06:12.01 or the Option key on the Mac, and click on it 165 00:06:12.01 --> 00:06:14.08 in order to successfully combine that effect. 166 00:06:14.08 --> 00:06:16.08 And notice we're first Transforming 167 00:06:16.08 --> 00:06:18.07 and then Zigzagging this path 168 00:06:18.07 --> 00:06:20.08 that includes this two point stroke. 169 00:06:20.08 --> 00:06:22.08 Now what I want you to do is 170 00:06:22.08 --> 00:06:26.07 hover over Roughing Only, and then press the Alt key 171 00:06:26.07 --> 00:06:29.05 or the Option on the Mac, and click on it 172 00:06:29.05 --> 00:06:32.06 in order to combine Roughing after Zigzag. 173 00:06:32.06 --> 00:06:35.00 So it should be Transform, Zigzag, Roughing. 174 00:06:35.00 --> 00:06:36.06 If Roughing comes first, 175 00:06:36.06 --> 00:06:40.01 my experience is that Illustrator goes down. 176 00:06:40.01 --> 00:06:43.00 And that is how you combine multiple Styles. 177 00:06:43.00 --> 00:06:44.07 Not only how you design styles 178 00:06:44.07 --> 00:06:48.09 that are meant to be combined, here inside Illustrator.
