10 00:00:18.02 --> 00:00:20.00 up here at the top of the dialog box, 11 00:00:20.00 --> 00:00:22.09 and then we have what is possibly the most poorly named 12 00:00:22.09 --> 00:00:26.04 function inside the entire software, In Merge Mode, 13 00:00:26.04 --> 00:00:29.04 whatever that is, Clicking Stroke Splits the Path. 14 00:00:29.04 --> 00:00:31.08 But it turns out, they're both useful functions, 15 00:00:31.08 --> 00:00:33.01 so let me show you how they work. 16 00:00:33.01 --> 00:00:34.07 I'll go ahead and cancel out, 17 00:00:34.07 --> 00:00:37.03 and then I'll press ctrl + N or cmd + N on the Mac 18 00:00:37.03 --> 00:00:38.08 to create a new document. 19 00:00:38.08 --> 00:00:41.00 It's going to have a width of 1008 pts 20 00:00:41.00 --> 00:00:44.03 and a height of 672 pts, just like usual. 21 00:00:44.03 --> 00:00:45.08 Now I'll go ahead and click OK 22 00:00:45.08 --> 00:00:47.09 in order to create that new file. 23 00:00:47.09 --> 00:00:50.06 And I'll go ahead and grab my Ellipse tool, 24 00:00:50.06 --> 00:00:53.06 and I'll just draw a circle someplace in this document 25 00:00:53.06 --> 00:00:56.04 like so, and I'll go ahead and fill it, let's say, 26 00:00:56.04 --> 00:00:57.06 with green. 27 00:00:57.06 --> 00:00:58.08 And now I'll press the V key 28 00:00:58.08 --> 00:01:00.05 to switch back to my Black Arrow tool. 29 00:01:00.05 --> 00:01:04.03 And I'm going to move this shape to right about there 30 00:01:04.03 --> 00:01:07.00 while I press the alt key or the option key on the Mac 31 00:01:07.00 --> 00:01:08.06 to create a duplicate of it. 32 00:01:08.06 --> 00:01:11.02 And then I'll press ctrl + C, ctrl + F, 33 00:01:11.02 --> 00:01:14.09 or cmd + C, cmd + F, to make a copy of this shape, 34 00:01:14.09 --> 00:01:16.08 and I'll click on the word Transform 35 00:01:16.08 --> 00:01:18.05 to bring up the transform panel, 36 00:01:18.05 --> 00:01:21.02 make sure that the right point in the reference point matrix 37 00:01:21.02 --> 00:01:23.07 is selected, then go to the fly out menu 38 00:01:23.07 --> 00:01:25.04 and choose Flip Horizontal 39 00:01:25.04 --> 00:01:27.04 in order to flip that shape like so. 40 00:01:27.04 --> 00:01:29.03 And now I'm just going to marquee both these shapes 41 00:01:29.03 --> 00:01:30.06 and drag them down. 42 00:01:30.06 --> 00:01:32.07 And what I want to do is create a slight gap 43 00:01:32.07 --> 00:01:36.00 between these three shapes like so. 44 00:01:36.00 --> 00:01:38.04 All right, so now let's say I go ahead and marquee 45 00:01:38.04 --> 00:01:40.02 all three shapes to select them, 46 00:01:40.02 --> 00:01:43.04 and I grab my Shape Builder tool and I press the shift key 47 00:01:43.04 --> 00:01:45.09 so that I can marquee all three shapes, 48 00:01:45.09 --> 00:01:48.07 and that basically doesn't do anything. 49 00:01:48.07 --> 00:01:51.04 They're still independent shapes as we can see 50 00:01:51.04 --> 00:01:52.08 by pressing the V key to switch back 51 00:01:52.08 --> 00:01:54.02 to the Black Arrow tool. 52 00:01:54.02 --> 00:01:56.01 And as you can see, I can drag them around 53 00:01:56.01 --> 00:01:57.09 just as much as I ever could. 54 00:01:57.09 --> 00:01:59.04 All right, so I'll press ctrl + Z, 55 00:01:59.04 --> 00:02:01.02 or cmd + Z on the Mac to undo that change, 56 00:02:01.02 --> 00:02:03.06 and then I'll just go ahead and marquee though shapes again, 57 00:02:03.06 --> 00:02:05.04 click on the Shape Builder tool 58 00:02:05.04 --> 00:02:07.02 and this time I'll press the enter key 59 00:02:07.02 --> 00:02:09.04 or the return key on the Mac to bring up 60 00:02:09.04 --> 00:02:11.06 the Shape Builder Tool Options dialog box, 61 00:02:11.06 --> 00:02:13.06 and I'll turn on Gap Detection. 62 00:02:13.06 --> 00:02:17.08 And now you have the option of setting how big the gap is. 63 00:02:17.08 --> 00:02:20.04 And you can just fool around with that to see what works, 64 00:02:20.04 --> 00:02:22.02 but I'm going to set it to medium, 65 00:02:22.02 --> 00:02:25.02 or you can dial in your own custom value if you like. 66 00:02:25.02 --> 00:02:27.06 And then I'll go ahead and click OK, 67 00:02:27.06 --> 00:02:31.00 and now if I once again shift marquee those shapes, 68 00:02:31.00 --> 00:02:34.00 I join them altogether because Illustrator 69 00:02:34.00 --> 00:02:35.04 is filling in the gap. 70 00:02:35.04 --> 00:02:38.00 Now it's not necessarily the most beautiful effect, 71 00:02:38.00 --> 00:02:39.06 as you can see right here, 72 00:02:39.06 --> 00:02:41.09 but it is possible and it may be the kind of thing 73 00:02:41.09 --> 00:02:44.07 that you'll find useful at some point in time. 74 00:02:44.07 --> 00:02:46.00 All right, I'm going to zoom back out 75 00:02:46.00 --> 00:02:48.07 position here, 89 00:03:20.03 --> 00:03:22.03 and thanks to the fact I have smart guides on, 90 00:03:22.03 --> 00:03:24.06 I can see those intersect lines. 91 00:03:24.06 --> 00:03:26.03 And now I'll drag up into the right 92 00:03:26.03 --> 00:03:29.04 while pressing the shift key like so. 93 00:03:29.04 --> 00:03:31.08 And that'll give me a perfectly diagonal line. 94 00:03:31.08 --> 00:03:33.03 Builder tool 100 00:03:43.02 --> 00:03:45.08 and you try to do something to these lines 101 00:03:45.08 --> 00:03:49.00 like shift marquee them, nothing really happens 102 00:03:49.00 --> 00:03:50.02 as you can see. 103 00:03:50.02 --> 00:03:52.04 And that's because once again, they are open 104 00:03:52.04 --> 00:03:54.00 and they are unfilled. 105 00:03:54.00 --> 00:03:55.08 If you would like something to happen, 106 00:03:55.08 --> 00:03:57.07 if you would like to split the arc at that straight line, 107 00:03:57.07 --> 00:04:00.07 for example, then go ahead and press the enter key 108 --> 00:05:09.01 I'll click on this arc to select it 138 00:05:09.01 --> 00:05:11.04 and then I'll press the backspace key to get rid of it, 139 00:05:11.04 --> 00:05:14.03 and now I'm going to marquee all three of these lines 140 00:05:14.03 --> 00:05:16.08 like so, and I'll go up to the Object menu, 141 00:05:16.08 --> 00:05:19.00 choose Path and then choose Join, 142 00:05:19.00 --> 00:05:22.04 or you can just press ctrl + J or cmd + J on the Mac 143 00:05:22.04 --> 00:05:26.01 in order to join those open paths into a single closed one. 144 00:05:26.01 --> 00:05:28.03 All right, now I'm
