00:00:22.06 that file, if it's supported by Illustrator, 10 00:00:22.06 --> 00:00:25.02 opens automatically inside Illustrator 11 00:00:25.02 --> 00:00:27.02 and not some other program. 12 00:00:27.02 --> 00:00:29.02 So here I am looking at the contents 13 00:00:29.02 --> 00:00:31.06 of the 01_create_doc folder, 14 00:00:31.06 --> 00:00:33.03 which is available to those of you 15 00:00:33.03 --> 00:00:35.05 who have access to the Exercise Files 16 00:00:35.05 --> 00:00:37.07 that are included with this course. 17 00:00:37.07 --> 00:00:40.02 I'm also looking at the thumbnail view 18 Illustrator's default file format, 38 00:01:32.05 --> 00:01:35.08 which you're going to use about 99 out of 100 times 39 00:01:35.08 --> 00:01:37.08 when saving your illustrations. 40 00:01:37.08 --> 00:01:40.06 And so notice, if I double-click on this file 41 00:01:40.06 --> 00:01:43.08 it opens automatically inside Illustrator 42 00:01:43.08 --> 00:01:45.08 and I can tell I'm inside Illustrator 43 00:01:45.08 --> 00:01:49.06 because I'm seeing these orange letters Ai 44 00:01:49.06 --> 00:01:52.03 up here in the top left corner of the screen, 45 00:01:52.03 --> 00:01:54.07 and perhaps more obviously I can see 46 00:01:54.07 --> 00:01:57.08 the words Illustrator CC on the far left side 47 00:01:57.08 --> 00:01:59.01 of the menu bar. 48 00:01:59.01 --> 00:02:01.07 Which is a very good thing, because unless you open 49 00:02:01.07 --> 00:02:04.08 your artwork in Illustrator, you can't take advantage 50 00:02:04.08 --> 00:02:07.04 of Illustrator's vast array of features. 51 00:02:07.04 --> 00:02:09.07 And I should say, this is a file that 52 00:02:09.07 --> 00:02:12.05 I drew from scratch inside Illustrator. 53 00:02:12.05 --> 00:02:15.03 Thus demonstrating that it's sufficiently powerful 54 00:02:15.03 --> 00:02:19.00 to create full blown professional quality artwork. 55 00:02:19.00 --> 00:02:21.00 Now when I showed this orange depiction 56 00:02:21.00 --> 00:02:23.08 of Michelangelo's David to a couple of people, 57 00:02:23.08 --> 00:02:25.02 they were under the impression 58 00:02:25.02 --> 00:02:26.08 that he looks angry. 59 00:02:26.08 --> 00:02:29.02 In fact, he looks apprehensive, 60 00:02:29.02 --> 00:02:31.06 and the reason is that Illustrator 61 00:02:31.06 --> 00:02:34.03 is an extremely challenging program. 62 00:02:34.03 --> 00:02:36.09 It is in fact the most powerful vector drawing 63 00:02:36.09 --> 00:02:39.04 program there is, and in as much as we would 64 00:02:39.04 --> 00:02:43.01 like to hope otherwise, that power comes at a price. 65 00:02:43.01 --> 00:02:45.04 But just as David conquered Goliath, 66 00:02:45.04 --> 00:02:48.08 we are going to conquer this program, I assure you. 67 00:02:48.08 --> 00:02:51.04 All right now let's check out the other two file formats. 68 00:02:51.04 --> 00:02:53.09 I'll go up to the Illustrator CC menu 69 00:02:53.09 --> 00:02:55.08 and I'll choose Hide Illustrator 70 00:02:55.08 --> 00:02:59.01 so that we can once again see that folder of thumbnails, 71 00:02:59.01 --> 00:03:02.09 and notice the next file, Welcome.eps. 72 00:03:02.09 --> 00:03:05.03 EPS stands for encapsulated post script, 73 00:03:05.03 --> 00:03:07.05 and it's an old school file format 74 00:03:07.05 --> 00:03:09.05 that was originally designed to allow you 75 00:03:09.05 --> 00:03:12.05 to export graphics from programs like Illustrator 76 00:03:12.05 --> 00:03:15.05 and then import them into page layout programs 77 00:03:15.05 --> 00:03:20.06 such as, well originally PageMaker and later QuarkXPress. 78 00:03:20.06 --> 00:03:22.07 Now once upon a time EPS was 79 00:03:22.07 --> 00:03:24.06 a state of the art file format. 80 00:03:24.06 --> 00:03:27.08 These days not so much, but EPS is still 81 00:03:27.08 --> 00:03:29.08 a common standard in some countries, 82 00:03:29.08 --> 00:03:32.07 and it's a common file format for clipart. 83 00:03:32.07 --> 00:03:34.07 And so the good news is if you find 84 00:03:34.07 --> 00:03:37.03 such a file, which you undoubtedly will, 85 00:03:37.03 --> 00:03:40.09 you could open and edit it inside Illustrator. 86 00:03:40.09 --> 00:03:42.09 But notice if I double-click on this file, 87 00:03:42.09 --> 00:03:45.04 for whatever reason, it opens inside 88 00:03:45.04 --> 00:03:47.08 of Apple's Preview utility. 89 00:03:47.08 --> 00:03:50.01 Now I've already zoomed in on the artwork 90 00:03:50.01 --> 00:03:52.00 and I can zoom in even further 91 00:03:52.00 --> 00:03:54.09 by clicking on this little magnifying glass icon 92 00:03:54.09 --> 00:03:58.08 up here in the toolbar, but notice if I zoom in 93 00:03:58.08 --> 00:04:01.01 on these irises here, you may be able 94 00:04:01.01 --> 00:04:04.00 to just make out these seams inside 95 00:04:04.00 --> 00:04:06.06 both the left and the right iris. 96 00:04:06.06 --> 00:04:08.08 Those aren't really there, and of course 97 00:04:08.08 --> 00:04:10.07 no matter how far I zoom in, 98 I'm going to set things up so that EPS files 104 00:04:27.00 --> 00:04:30.04 from now on open inside Illustrator, 105 00:04:30.04 --> 00:04:33.02 and you do that by right-clicking on the file 106 00:04:33.02 --> 00:04:35.09 and then choosing the Get Info command, 107 00:04:35.09 --> 00:04:37.05 which in case you're interested 108 00:04:37.05 --> 00:04:40.06 has a keyboard shortcut of Command + I, 109 00:04:40.06 --> 00:04:44.02 and that's going to bring up this slim panel over here 110 00:04:44.02 --> 00:04:46.04 on the left-hand side of the screen. 111 00:04:46.04 --> 00:04:49.04 Now, you want to make sure this area, Open With, 112 00:04:49.04 --> 00:04:52.02 is twirled open, so that you can see 113 00:04:52.02 --> 00:04:53.08 a list of applications. 114 00:04:53.08 --> 00:04:56.08 And then go ahead and click on this popup menu 115 00:04:56.08 --> 00:05:00.08 and choose the most recent version of Illustrator CC. 116 00:05:00.08 --> 00:05:03.05 Next, go ahead and click on the Change 130 00:05:41.06 --> 00:05:44.00 and it's a popular file format for creating 131 00:05:44.00 --> 00:05:46.00 scalable graphics that you intend 132 00:05:46.00 --> 00:05:49.04 to distribute on the web, or view on a smartphone, 133 00:05:49.04 --> 00:05:51.06 tablet, or other screen device. 134 00:05:51.06 --> 00:05:54.03 And as with AI and EPS files, 135 00:05:54.03 --> 00:05:57.04 your best tool for editing a scalable vector graphic 136 00:05:57.04 --> 00:06:00.08 is Illustrator, but notice on this particular machine 137 00:06:00.08 --> 00:06:03.00 if I go ahead and double-click on this file 138 00:06:03.00 --> 00:06:05.04 it opens inside of Firefox, 139 00:06:05.04 --> 00:06:08.04 which is a popular open source web browser. 140 00:06:08.04 --> 00:06:11.04 Now the good news is that I can scale the graphic 141 00:06:11.04 --> 00:06:13.09 by going up to the View menu, choosing Zoom, 142 00:06:13.09 --> 00:06:16.03 and then choosing the Zoom In command, 143 00:06:16.03 --> 00:06:18.04 which as you can see has a keyboard shortcut 144 00:06:18.04 --> 00:06:21.09 of Command + Plus, and so I can continue to zoom 145 00:06:21.09 --> 00:06:24.06 as much as I like by pressing Command + Plus 146 00:06:24.06 --> 00:06:27.05 over and over again, and now I'm just going to 147 00:06:27.05 --> 00:06:30.02 go ahead and scroll down, perhaps not quite that much, 148 00:06:30.02 --> 00:06:32.06 just so that I can see David's face 149 00:06:32.06 --> 00:06:36.07 and I'll go ahead and scroll over to the right as well. 150 00:06:36.07 --> 00:06:38.06 And we can see that David's floating window, like this one right here. 179 00:07:51.00 --> 00:07:53.00 Which is scalable, as you can see, 180 00:07:53.00 --> 00:07:55.05 so I can just go ahead and make it smaller 181 00:07:55.05 --> 00:07:58.02 and drag it around, and it also allows me 182 00:07:58.02 --> 00:08:00.04 to see through to other applications, 183 00:08:00.04 --> 00:08:03.07 such as the Finder running in the background. 184 00:08:03.07 --> 00:08:05.09 But I frankly prefer to let Illustrator 185 00:08:05.09 --> 00:08:07.08 consume the entire screen, 186 00:08:07.08 --> 00:08:11.04 so that I can focus on this very powerful application. 187 00:08:11.04 --> 00:08:13.06 And if you want to make that happen as well, 188 00:08:13.06 --> 00:08:15.03 then go up to the Window menu 189 00:08:15.03 --> 00:08:19.00 and choose the Application Frame command to turn it on. 190 00:08:19.00 --> 00:08:21.09 Now this command is turned on by default, 191 00:08:21.09 --> 00:08:24.01 but I just want you to notice that it's here 192 00:08:24.01 --> 00:08:26.07 because it's only available with a Macintosh 193 00:08:26.07 --> 00:08:28.04 version of Illustrator. 194 00:08:28.04 --> 00:08:31.08 And so notice in my case, if I turn that command on, 195 00:08:31.08 --> 00:08:35.01 then I can no longer see any of the other applications 196 00:08:35.01 --> 00:08:37.05 running in the background, and I can focus
