doesn't provide master pages. 4 00:00:08.04 --> 00:00:12.00 That's more in the domain of a dedicated page layout program 5 00:00:12.00 --> 00:00:13.07 like InDesign. 6 00:00:13.07 --> 00:00:17.00 And so the idea is you can use master pages to repeat 7 00:00:17.00 --> 00:00:20.04 commonly used elements such as headers and footers and 8 00:00:20.04 --> 00:00:22.06 page numbers and so forth. 9 00:00:22.06 --> 00:00:25.08 The thing is, while master pages are super useful, they're 10 00:00:25.08 --> 00:00:29.01 best suited to lots and lots of pages that are the same 11 00:00:29.01 --> 00:00:32.08 size and orientation, which is not the case for this 12 00:00:32.08 --> 00:00:35.01 particular piece of artwork. 13 00:00:35.01 --> 00:00:38.07 Instead what we have here is a book cover laid out flat. 14 00:00:38.07 --> 00:00:41.01 So we have three art boards in all. 15 00:00:41.01 --> 00:00:43.09 The left one is for the back cover, the center one's for 16 00:00:43.09 --> 00:00:46.03 the spine, and then the right hand one is for the 17 00:00:46.03 --> 00:00:47.08 front cover. 18 00:00:47.08 --> 00:00:50.03 And so if you were to print this out onto one sheet 19 00:00:50.03 --> 00:00:53.00 and then wrap it around a book, you would have a cover. 20 00:00:53.00 --> 00:00:56.09 And we do have some repeated elements such as the author's 21 00:00:56.09 --> 00:00:59.05 name and the publisher's logo. 22 00:00:59.05 --> 00:01:02.05 But these elements appear sometimes in different locations 23 00:01:02.05 --> 00:01:05.04 from the front cover to the back cover, and definitely 24 00:01:05.04 --> 00:01:07.09 different angles on the spine. 25 00:01:07.09 --> 00:01:10.05 So this is a case where symbols are going to work better 26 00:01:10.05 --> 00:01:12.09 than a master page. 27 00:01:12.09 --> 00:01:16.03 And so I'll go ahead and switch over to my starter 28 00:01:16.03 --> 00:01:18.07 document here, and I'll select the author name with my 29 00:01:18.07 --> 00:01:21.02 black arrow tool, and notice that I've hidden my right 30 00:01:21.02 --> 00:01:24.03 side panels by pressing Shift+Tab, and that just gives me 31 00:01:24.03 --> 00:01:25.09 more room to work. 32 00:01:25.09 --> 00:01:28.02 But I do need to bring back the symbols panel, and so I'll 33 00:01:28.02 --> 00:01:31.07 move my cursor all the way over to the right side of the 34 00:01:31.07 --> 00:01:34.08 screen, at which point my panels will come back and I'll 35 00:01:34.08 --> 00:01:38.09 grab the club there for the symbols panel, and I'll drag 36 00:01:38.09 --> 00:01:41.08 it and drop it so it's a floating panel like so. 37 00:01:41.08 --> 00:01:44.00 And then I'll expand it. 38 00:01:44.00 --> 00:01:46.09 All right, now what we want to do is take the author name 39 00:01:46.09 --> 00:01:48.08 and save it as a new symbol. 40 00:01:48.08 --> 00:01:51.04 And you can do that by clicking on the little page icon 41 00:01:51.04 --> 00:01:53.02 at the bottom of the panel. 42 00:01:53.02 --> 00:01:55.04 And I'll go ahead and call this guy Author. 43 00:01:55.04 --> 00:01:57.09 I'll set the registration point to the bottom right corner, 44 00:01:57.09 --> 00:02:00.06 and I'm going to go ahead with the static symbol, just because 45 00:02:00.06 --> 00:02:02.09 it's easier to keep track of and we don't have any need 46 00:02:02.09 --> 00:02:04.08 for a dynamic one. 47 00:02:04.08 --> 00:02:06.05 And now click Okay. 48 00:02:06.05 --> 00:02:09.06 And we end up with an instance of a symbol as we're seeing 49 00:02:09.06 --> 00:02:13.02 indicated by the word symbol on the far left side of the 50 00:02:13.02 --> 00:02:14.06 control panel. 51 00:02:14.06 --> 00:02:18.04 Now you may see that right now, the author's name is just 52 00:02:18.04 --> 00:02:20.00 set to author name. 53 00:02:20.00 --> 00:02:22.00 That's because I don't know what the author's name is. 54 00:02:22.00 --> 00:02:25.01 And yet I can still go ahead and lay out the design. 55 00:02:25.01 --> 00:02:28.01 And so I'm going to go up to the view menu and choose smart 56 00:02:28.01 --> 00:02:30.08 guides in order to turn them on. 57 00:02:30.08 --> 00:02:33.05 And I'll go ahead and drag this guy so it snaps into 58 00:02:33.05 --> 00:02:36.06 alignment with the right side of the back cover, and then 59 00:02:36.06 --> 00:02:40.01 I'll press and hold the Shift and Alt keys, that's Shift 60 00:02:40.01 --> 00:02:43.01 and Option on the Mac, in order to constrain the angle 61 00:02:43.01 --> 00:02:45.08 of my drag to exactly horizontal and create a copy. 62 00:02:45.08 --> 00:02:49.02 And then, I want you to notice that my keyboard increment 63 00:02:49.02 --> 00:02:52.01 is set to one point, and I'm confirming that by pressing 64 00:02:52.01 --> 00:02:55.07 Ctrl+K here on the PC, or Command+K on the Mac. 65 00:02:55.07 --> 00:02:59.03 After which I'll go ahead and press Shift+Left Arrow three 66 00:02:59.03 --> 00:03:02.00 times in a row, to nudge the author's name Ctrl+A or Command+A on the Mac to select all that text 141 00:06:29.08 --> 00:06:34.09 and I will enter Barbara and Warner, is what 142 00:06:34.09 --> 00:06:37.03 I'm looking for, just an arbitrary 00:07:07.00 And now I want to take this guy and I want to scale it. 154 00:07:07.00 --> 00:07:09.06 Obviously it's way too big, so I'll press the S key to 155 00:07:09.06 --> 00:07:11.02 switch to my scale tool. 156 00:07:11.02 --> 00:07:14.00 By default, in this case, the origin point is the bottom 157 00:07:14.00 --> 00:07:16.00 left corner, that's what I want. 158 00:07:16.00 --> 00:07:18.03
