store to an international market. 00:08.990 --> 00:14.180 Now, first of all, great news because with all of the amazing hard work that you've put in to get 00:14.180 --> 00:19.160 to this point, taking your business international is in fact a fairly easy step. 00:19.160 --> 00:22.520 And so in this lecture, we're going to start with the markets themselves. 00:22.520 --> 00:28.640 Now of course, you will remember many lectures ago we set up our two markets, the first one being 00:28.640 --> 00:33.710 our primary market which is typically the market where you live or where your business is based. 00:33.710 --> 00:38.270 And so while I've been recording this, I've been in Portugal, which is why Portugal is my primary 00:38.270 --> 00:38.810 market. 00:38.810 --> 00:42.290 And then in addition to that, of course, we set up the United States. 00:42.290 --> 00:48.200 And that's because I encouraged you to start your business in the US, as it is the largest and easiest 00:48.200 --> 00:49.820 market to get started. 00:49.820 --> 00:55.340 And then just as a reminder, if I go over to the checkout, of course, in this country region box, 00:55.340 --> 01:01.250 when I open this up, we only see Portugal and the United States because those are our active markets. 01:01.250 --> 01:06.050 But of course, in order to sell internationally, we want to have every single country in the world 01:06.050 --> 01:07.460 listed in this menu. 01:07.460 --> 01:13.400 And so in order to do that, what we need to do is go back to the markets themselves and activate the 01:13.400 --> 01:14.900 international market. 01:14.900 --> 01:19.400 So clicking into international, the first thing we'll want to do is to come up here where it says more 01:19.400 --> 01:20.060 actions. 01:20.060 --> 01:21.860 And then click on Edit Market. 01:21.890 --> 01:24.500 Now for the market name we can leave as is. 01:24.500 --> 01:26.690 International is absolutely perfect. 01:26.690 --> 01:35.060 But you will notice that of the 237 countries that are available, only 26 of them are currently included 01:35.060 --> 01:36.530 in my international market. 01:36.530 --> 01:40.700 And so the first thing I want to do is to include all of the other countries in the world. 01:40.700 --> 01:43.040 And to do that, I just click on this edit button. 01:43.040 --> 01:47.540 And then for each region, starting with Africa, select all of the countries. 01:47.540 --> 01:49.640 So for Africa I check the box. 01:49.640 --> 01:53.810 You can now see that all 62 countries in Africa have been included for Asia. 01:53.810 --> 01:59.480 At the moment I only have seven out of 48, but if I uncheck this and then check it again, I now get 01:59.480 --> 02:02.540 all 48 countries collapsing this menu. 02:02.540 --> 02:04.310 I'll do the same thing for Europe. 02:04.310 --> 02:08.420 And here you'll notice that 51 of 52 countries have been selected. 02:08.420 --> 02:12.680 And that's because Portugal, which is in Europe, is already in my primary market. 02:12.680 --> 02:16.970 So collapsing the European menu will do the same for North America. 02:16.970 --> 02:19.880 And by default it's going to include the United States. 02:19.880 --> 02:21.470 So we want to remove that. 02:21.470 --> 02:25.460 So scrolling on down towards the bottom here here is the US. 02:25.460 --> 02:28.640 So now we need to set up shipping for our international market. 02:37.400 --> 02:40.490 And you can see at the moment that it's only partially configured. 02:40.490 --> 02:43.910 And that's because we've only set up shipping to 26 countries. 02:43.910 --> 02:47.300 But of course we just added all of the other countries in the world. 02:47.300 --> 02:49.610 So we also need to set up shipping for them. 02:49.610 --> 02:55.640 And so to do that we come over to shipping and delivery, click into the general section and then scroll 02:55.640 --> 03:00.980 down to the shipping zones where of course we've already set up shipping zones for both the domestic 03:00.980 --> 03:02.780 market and the United States. 03:02.780 --> 03:08.360 And so to add all of the countries in international into our international shipping zone, come over 03:08.360 --> 03:11.570 here to these three little dots, click on Edit Zone. 03:11.570 --> 03:13.340 And then here where you see international. 03:13.340 --> 03:18.740 Simply uncheck and check the box to include every single other zone in the world. 03:18.740 --> 03:20.330 And then click on done. 03:20.330 --> 03:25.940 We can then save this and then scroll up and go back to our markets. 03:25.940 --> 03:30.680 Because the only thing left to do now is to actually activate our international market, because as 03:30.680 --> 03:32.780 you can see, it's still inactive. 03:32.780 --> 03:34.520 So to do that we click into it. 03:34.520 --> 03:40.040 And then up here where it says inactive, simply make it active, click on save once again. 03:40.040 just to check that everything's working perfectly. 03:50.570 --> 03:57.050 If I go back to the checkout and refresh now when I click into this country region box, every single 03:57.050 --> 03:59.480 country in the world is now listed. 03:59.480 --> 04:02.600 And that means we can now sell internationally. 04:02.600 --> 04:08.720 Now, just before I finish this lecture, I want to talk about the exciting subject of taxes, because 04:08.720 --> 04:10.670 I get asked this all the time. 04:10.670 --> 04:14.780 And so going back to markets, if you click into any of these markets. 04:14.780 --> 04:20.120 So for example, the United States, you're going to see this duties and import taxes. 04:20.120 --> 04:25.730 And when I click into it this is where Shopify gives me the opportunity to set up duties and import 04:25.730 --> 04:28.280 taxes for, in this case, the United States. 04:28.280 --> 04:31.160 But of course I could do this for any country in the world. 04:31.160 --> 04:34.550 So the question therefore becomes, what do I put in here? 04:34.550 --> 04:40.220 Well, first of all, duties and import taxes can become very complicated very quickly. 04:40.220 --> 04:45.350 Secondly, I am not a tax advisor, so I am not in a position to give you professional advice. 04:45.350 --> 04:49.190 But what I would like to do is at least give you some kind of a roadmap. 04:49.190 --> 04:55.550 And the roadmap is this when you first start selling in your store, please don't worry too much about 04:55.550 --> 04:58.670 duties and import taxes when you only have a few sales. 04:58.670 --> 04:59.630 It makes little sense. 04:59.760 --> 05:03.060 Is to start spending an awful lot of time setting all of this up. 05:03.060 --> 05:06.090 However, of course your business is going to grow. 05:06.090 --> 05:07.800 What you sell and where you sell. 05:07.800 --> 05:13.650 It may attract duties and import taxes, but at that point you will have some money, your business 05:13.650 --> 05:19.230 will be generating revenue, and it's at that point that you should engage a local tax advisor. 05:19.230 --> 05:24.450 And it's important that it's local, because duties and import taxes vary enormously throughout the 05:24.450 --> 05:26.670 world, and it's also a moving target. 05:26.670 --> 05:31.350 Things change all the time, but your local advisor will take care of all of that.
