WEBVTT

00:00.420 --> 00:05.970
Hey welcome to a new section in the course this section is all about actually how to shoot video with

00:05.970 --> 00:06.850
your camera.

00:07.050 --> 00:11.940
In this lesson we're talking about exposure basically how to make sure your video is bright enough not

00:11.940 --> 00:15.400
too bright or not too dark with whatever camera you're using.

00:15.540 --> 00:20.760
So we're actually going to head out to a real world location where Sam is going to explain how to properly

00:20.760 --> 00:22.420
expose your video.

00:22.590 --> 00:27.450
So now we're going to talk about exposure and really what this comes down to is how much light is in

00:27.450 --> 00:33.450
your frame and we decide to do this in Phil's kitchen just because a lot of times in documentaries or

00:33.880 --> 00:37.020
you know even shooting something for yourself you want to be in a natural environment.

00:37.020 --> 00:41.400
So it comes to exposure light is really what we're talking about.

00:41.460 --> 00:45.170
It's how much light is on your subject how much light is in your frame.

00:45.240 --> 00:50.880
And there's three ways that you control this with a smartphone you won't necessarily set these but they

00:50.880 --> 00:52.440
will be affecting your image.

00:52.440 --> 00:59.670
And for dislodges or merely cameras it's really essential and that's useful to speed your F-stop or

00:59.670 --> 01:02.310
iris or aperture and your ISO.

01:02.310 --> 01:04.090
So the first is shutter speed.

01:04.110 --> 01:08.700
Back in the day you know for old film camera this would be you take a photo and how quickly did that

01:08.700 --> 01:11.310
shutter expose your piece of film.

01:11.310 --> 01:16.800
Now when it comes to film or video Think of every second the shutter is moving up and down allowing

01:16.800 --> 01:22.430
light in a slower shutter speed allows more light a faster speed allows less light.

01:22.620 --> 01:28.210
So currently I'm at one fiftieth shutter speed so let's go a little bit slower.

01:28.230 --> 01:28.660
Oh man.

01:28.660 --> 01:30.140
We're going way over exposed here.

01:30.190 --> 01:32.800
I get the exposure right so I'm up a one.

01:32.880 --> 01:35.330
Let's go one tenth shutter speed.

01:35.400 --> 01:38.590
Now 6.3 ISO 200.

01:38.940 --> 01:42.480
And you know when the image is still you can't really tell the difference.

01:42.480 --> 01:48.570
But Phil if you could go see that the hand is all blurry you can't really see if you're moving the camera.

01:48.570 --> 01:51.410
It has this weird sort of jittery effect.

01:51.420 --> 01:56.850
It can be really cool and this is actually a lot of people do this at nighttime to get a cool of a ghostly

01:56.850 --> 01:57.810
effect.

01:57.810 --> 02:03.730
Now let's bring the shutter back up and I just want to show that movement again at one fiftieth shutter

02:03.760 --> 02:06.130
and this is really what I consider to be the standard.

02:06.360 --> 02:09.570
So you can see there's still a little bit that blur but it's manageable.

02:09.630 --> 02:11.460
It looks more natural.

02:11.460 --> 02:13.680
Now let's go up to let's go crazy.

02:13.680 --> 02:15.950
Let's go to one for hundredth shudder.

02:15.960 --> 02:20.880
And I think this is where a lot of people go out into the day and they need to expose properly so they

02:20.880 --> 02:22.660
bring the other way up.

02:22.800 --> 02:29.720
So not one four hundredth shutter ISO 200 f 2.8 and you can see this a lot less blur on his hand and

02:29.730 --> 02:32.660
it's a much sharper crisper image.

02:32.670 --> 02:37.630
Some people like this effect you know Saving Private Ryan is a great example of higher shutter stuff.

02:37.980 --> 02:41.340
But it can look a little too sterile a little to digital for me.

02:41.340 --> 02:46.260
So personally I like the issue 150 of next is F-stop.

02:46.290 --> 02:48.950
It's how much light your lenses allowing in.

02:48.950 --> 02:51.480
So on the inside there's an aperture.

02:51.480 --> 02:52.920
It's very similar to your eyes.

02:52.920 --> 02:58.110
You know when there's a lot of light you'll have to close down the aperture making a much smaller hole

02:58.350 --> 03:01.170
if you want to allow more light and you open it up.

03:01.170 --> 03:02.920
So we're at two point eight here.

03:02.970 --> 03:05.730
You can see that the background is slightly out of focus.

03:05.730 --> 03:11.680
Fills nicely in focus and there's depth there so let's close it down.

03:11.820 --> 03:17.620
Now to let's see let's go let's go crazy at the level now which for indoors is kind of crazy.

03:17.620 --> 03:21.870
So we'll bring the ISO up and you can see that a lot more is in focus.

03:21.870 --> 03:24.960
You can see the background image you can see fill in focus.

03:24.960 --> 03:30.210
Everything's kind of in focus so this can be great if you're running and gunning or maybe you're trying

03:30.210 --> 03:33.810
to have everything just look nice and frame and everything in focus.

03:33.810 --> 03:39.600
For me personally I love being as open as possible I think having that shallow depth of field is really

03:39.600 --> 03:42.450
the look I prefer but it's different for everyone.

03:42.450 --> 03:47.340
The final thing and really as I've been adjusting all these things you know the show has remained the

03:47.340 --> 03:50.990
same it's about 150 of where 2.8.

03:51.270 --> 03:58.740
But the iso's of the last last piece of this puzzle really what it used to be is it was the sensitivity

03:58.740 --> 03:59.440
of your film.

03:59.460 --> 04:06.030
It was how how well did it perform in low light versus how unsensitive was it.

04:06.050 --> 04:10.960
You know if you went out into the sunlight and needed something that took more light to expose.

04:11.220 --> 04:16.090
So currently I am ISO 250 which is pretty good.

04:16.110 --> 04:20.440
And you can see now let's go up to 16 hundred.

04:20.550 --> 04:22.180
This is as of 16:00.

04:22.290 --> 04:25.890
It's so much more sensitive to light its way overexposed.

04:25.890 --> 04:36.300
I had to bring my F's up all the way to a to look well expose So all these numbers do coincide with

04:36.300 --> 04:39.850
one another to keep it simple it's how sensitive is your camera.

04:40.050 --> 04:44.100
And at that certain cameras performed better with higher ISOs.

04:44.100 --> 04:50.750
The reason the ace of nest 2 is so popular is that you can shoot at these crazy high ISOs other cameras.

04:50.880 --> 04:52.830
Not so much for a smartphone.

04:52.830 --> 04:57.960
The ISO sensitivity really only takes you so far because it's just a smaller camera smaller sensor all

04:57.960 --> 04:59.150
these other things.

04:59.160 --> 05:02.140
So those are really the essentials for exposure.

05:02.160 --> 05:08.700
And as we go into Solarz and other cameras will get more in depth about how you actually expose your

05:08.700 --> 05:13.880
image and how you use these tools because if you're trying to really get serious about film making While

05:13.890 --> 05:18.740
this can seem daunting and like a lot of information it's something important to learn.

05:18.750 --> 05:21.410
And really it's become second nature after so long.

05:21.410 --> 05:23.260
So we'll get to that later.

05:23.400 --> 05:25.680
And now we're going to be talking about composition.
